The Indian Traditional Cumin Rice or Jeera Rice is an aromatic rice-dish common in South Asian households. Cumin Seeds are an important ingredient in the recipe that are fried in hot oil. “Jeera” or “Zeera” is a Hindi word for “cumin seeds”. The recipe for this fragrant rice dish is not found in ancient books of culinary art of India. But there are records from the Mughal period. The dish was experimented on for years and ultimately became popular in India. Various varieties exist both in North and South India. Punjabi Jeera Rice is quite popular. The dish is also consumed in Pakistan.

Ingredients
- ½ cup Basmati Rice
- 2 tbsp Clarified Butter
- 1 pc Green Chili
- 2½ cups Water
- ½ tsp Salt
- 2 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1 pc Bay Leaf
- 4 pc Green Cardamom Pod Seeds
- 2 inch Cinnamon Stick
- 4 pcs Clove
Instructions
- Heat clarified butter in a pot.
- Add bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom, and sauté.
- Fry cumin seeds on low heat.
- Add green chili to the pot.
- Transfer the rice to the pot and cook for 3minutes.
- Add water and salt.
- Cook on low heat until water gets absorbed.
- After cooking, let the rice rest for 15 minutes.
- Remove and serve.
NOTES
- You can use oil instead of clarified butter.
- You can add onions.
