The word “Naan” comes from the Persian word “n’n” which means bread or food. Naan originated in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indian subcontinent. It is always served hot. The pairing of Naan and Butter Chicken is relished across India. The bread is dipped in this gravy made with tomatoes and butter. The distinct taste of the bread comes from adding yeast. In Pakistani cuisine, Naans are flavored with ingredients like rosewater or vetiver. In India, Nigella seeds are often added.

Ingredients
 

  • 3 cups All Purpose Flour – Plain Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 tbsp White Sugar – Regular Sugar – Granulated Sugar
  • 2 tsp Dry Yeast
  • cup Milk Lukewarm
  • 2 tbsp Plain Yogurt
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • 2 cloves Garlic Grated
  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 3 tbsp Cilantro Chopped
  • 2 tsp Garlic Minced

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, combine flour and salt.
  • In a separate small bowl, combine yeast, sugar, and milk. Set aside for 5-10 minutes.
  • In another bowl, combine water, yogurt, and oil.
  • Once the yeast is activated, add the flour mixture into the water mixture. Add in grated garlic.
  • Knead the dough and let it rise for an hour.
  • When the dough becomes double in size, divide the dough into equal parts.
  • Melt butter. Add minced garlic and chopped cilantro.
  • Take an iron skillet and heat it on medium flame.
  • Make the dough into an oval shape and roll it.
  • Transfer the dough onto the skillet.
  • Cook the Naan for 20 seconds.
  • When the Naan turns golden brown, remove it from the skillet.
  • Brush the Naan with the garlic butter prepared earlier.
  • Serve the Naan.

NOTES

You can use less flour and make smaller Naans.
COOKING TIPS:

Stretch the Naan with your hands and not a rolling pin since rolling toughens the dough. If the Naan doesn’t get bubbles, increase the heat. For fluffy Naans, make the dough thicker.

Naan is served with curries.
