The delicious Modak is served as the holy offering during the prayer and then distributed among the devotees. There is also a steam version of Modak, known as Ukadiche Modak.

Ingredients
 

Dough

  • cups All Purpose Flour – Plain Flour
  • 2 tbsp Semolina
  • 2 tbsp Clarified Butter Hot
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • Water For kneading
  • Oil For deep frying

Filling

  • 1 cup Grated Coconut
  • ½ cup Palm Sugar – Palm Jaggery
  • 1 tbsp Clarified Butter
  • 2 tbsp Almond Chopped
  • 2 tbsp Cashew Chopped
  • 2 tbsp Raisin Chopped
  • ½ tsp Ground Cardamom Powder

Instructions
 

Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, semolina, and salt.
  • Pour the hot clarified butter and crumble the flour so that it becomes moist.
  • Add water and start kneading. Knead nicely for at least 5 minutes to make a soft and smooth dough out of it.

Filling

  • In a large pan, add clarified butter. Add coconut and jaggery and sauté well till the jaggery melts.
  • Once the mixture becomes aromatic, add cashew nuts, almonds, raisins, and cardamom powder. Mix everything well.
  • Set the stuffing aside to cool.

Modak

  • Take a small ball out of the dough and roll it into a circle with a rolling pin. It should not be too thin and should be around 5 inches in diameter.
  • Now place a spoon full of stuffing at the center of the rolled dough. Brush the sides of the dough with some water.
  • Pleat the Modak from the edges and collect everything at the center. Seal the Modak after gathering at the center and form a dumpling.
  • Deep fry the dumplings in medium hot oil till it becomes crispy and turns golden.
  • Place the fried Modak on paper to drain the excess oil. Enjoy the Indian Traditional Fried Sweet Dumplings from Maharashtra – Modak.

NOTES

You can store the Modak in an air-tight container and enjoy it for up to 5 days.
RECIPE VARIATIONS:
This recipe is the fried version of Modak. Another version includes cooking by steaming the sweet dumplings. It is called Ukadiche Modak or steamed Modak.
COOKING TIPS:
While rolling the dough, make sure that the center is a little thick compared to the edges. Otherwise, the Modak will break.
