The Indian Traditional Yogurt Fritters or Dahi Vada is a street snack dipped in yogurt and sprinkled with spices.
The dish is popular throughout India. “Dahi” means “curd” in Hindi. “Vada” is “fritters”. In Marathi, the dish is called Dahi Vade. Punjabis call the dish “Dahi Bhalla”. A 12th-century Sanskrit encyclopedia mentions the snack. There are also mentions in text from 500 B.C.
There are various varieties of Vada. These include Idli Vada, Medu Vada, and Vada Pav. Medu Vada is made of black gram flour. Idli Vada is a combination of a rice cake and Vada. Vada Pav is a stuffing of potatoes in a bun.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Black Gram
- 1/2 cup Black Lentil
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 2 cups Yogurt
- 3 tbsp Tamarind Chutney
- 4 tbsp Water chilled
- 1/2 tsp Ground Cumin Powder
- 1/2 tsp Black Salt – Kala Namak
- 1/2 tsp Chaat Masala Powder
Instructions
- Add the lentils to a blender and make a smooth paste.
- Transfer the paste to a bowl and add salt.
- Heat oil in a pan on medium flame.
- Drop the batter into the pan.
- Cook on both sides until golden-brown.
- Take a bowl and add yogurt. Whisk well.
- Pour the yogurt over the Vada.
- Sprinkle spices and serve.
