Methi Muthia is one of the most delicious snacks originating from India.  You can find it in the streets of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The Indian Traditional Fried Fenugreek Dumplings from Gujarat – Methi Muthia is an on-the-go snack that you can enjoy with ketchup. Methi means fenugreek, and Muthiya means dumpling. Its preparation involves making a dough with chickpea flour, wheat flour, and fresh fenugreek. You can either fry these dumplings or steam them if you prefer them to be healthier.

Methi Muthia tastes delicious when you eat them hot along with any sauce or condiment. You can also prepare this to add to other Gujarati dishes like Undhiyu. Methi Muthia is savory with a perfect balance of herbs and fenugreek. You can also carry it in your tiffin box, and it will still taste delicious after several hours. The plain version of Methi Muthia, which doesn’t have fenugreek, is known as Muthia.

Ingredients
 

For Preparing the Dough

  • 2 cups Gram Flour
  • 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tbsp Water
  • 2 tsp White Sugar – Regular Sugar – Granulated Sugar
  • 2.5 cups Fresh Fenugreek Leaf Chopped
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Semolina
  • 2 tsp White Sesame Seed
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder – Curcuma Powder
  • 1 tsp Ground Coriander Powder
  • 1 tsp Ground Cumin Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 2 tbsp Ginger Green Chili Paste
  • 2 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • Vegetable Oil For Frying

Instructions
 

Preparing the Dough

  • Add all the ingredients for the dough, except water, to a large bowl and combine them well.
  • Add the water and make a smooth dough. Keep this Muthia dough aside for 20 minutes.

Making the Muthia

  • Divide the dough into several small sections.
  • Meanwhile, add the oil to a frying pan and let it heat.
  • Take a section of the dough and roll it with your hands into an oval shape.
  • Add the rolled Muthia into hot oil and fry until golden brown.
  • Once cooked, take them out and place them on a kitchen towel to drain the excess oil.
  • Your Indian Traditional Fried Fenugreek Dumplings from Gujarat – Methi Muthia is ready. Serve hot with some tomato ketchup.

NOTES

If the dough becomes runny, you can add some more chickpea flour.
RECIPE VARIATIONS:

The plain version of this dish is called Muthia. It doesn't include fenugreek.
